Logistics and the industrial revolution in Limburg

In the third episode on the history of logistics in Limburg, we take you back to the industrial revolution. During this period, roughly from 1850 until 1900, the Netherlands became acquainted with mass production in fabrics and steam engines. A development that started in Limburg. The new steam engines eventually made new ways of transport possible, and also improved logistics. This article takes you back in time to the beginning of the industrial revolution, the role of the steam engine and the consequences of the industrialization for Limburg’s logistics.

Logistics industry influenced by changing trade patterns

After the economic crisis, world trade is growing again. After record growth in world trade in 2010 (14.5%), the WTO expects a growth of 6.5% for 2011.[1] The global flow of goods will keep growing, because of the worldwide economic growth, globalization and technological developments. But the trade will not grow in the same way it used to do before. Trade patterns will change and shift to other countries in the future. Logistics throughout the centuries – The Golden Age

In this second article on history of logistics in Limburg and the Netherlands, we will take you back to the Golden Age. During the 17th century, the Dutch Golden Age brought wealth to the Northern part of the Netherlands. These were the times of the Dutch East India Company, which was one of the biggest trade companies in this period! But these were also the times of the Eighty Years War and separation between Northern and Southern Provinces (which roughly correspond to the actual provinces of Limburg and Brabant and Belgium). We’ll explore how these events had an impact on trade and logistics services in Limburg.

Dutch logistics: from distribution to coordination
